THE PLOT OF THE PLAY

Guglielmo and Ferrando, young officers from Naples, bet with the old philosopher Don Alfonso that their beloved ones, Fiordiligi and Dorabella, will never betray them. Don Alfonso arranges a departure of the two officers for the war, and a little later he presents them again to the two girls, but this time disguised as Albanian noblemen which are supposed to have fallen in love with them. In the beginning the girls repel their proposals, but as they are rather pressing, the girls finally give in and accept to marry the Albanian noblemen. As they are preparing for the wedding reception, Guglielmo and Ferrando break in undisguised, revealing the trick and the girls' unfaithfulness. Don Alfonso reconciles the situation, and the opera comes to a happy end with mutual vows of faith.

Fortunato l’ uom che prende
Ogni cosa pel buon verso
E tra I casi e le vicende
Da ragion guidar si fa.
Quel che suole altrui far piangere
fia per lui cagion di riso
E del mindo in mezzo ai turbini
Bella calma trovera
